The Ionia Girls’ Cross Country team had an excellent race at the MHSAA Division 2 Regional Meet at St. Francis Retreat Center in DeWitt. The combination of a hilly and very muddy course did not lend itself to fast times. However, the Bulldogs ran better than their seed projections and raced to a 9th place team finish. Senior Maddie Hanulcik earned a berth to the D2 State Finals by placing 17th in 21:05. Clara Deeren followed her to the finish, placing 28th in 22:17. Megan Lennemann finished 43rd in 23:26. Charly Smith crossed the line in 58th place with a time of 24:55. Tempyst Aikens rounded out the scoring, placing 80th in 28:18. Maddie will compete in the state finals next Saturday at the Michigan International Speedway. The rest of the Bulldogs will wrap up their season with a Thursday evening race at Uncle John’s Cider Mill in St. Johns.
