Ionia Varsity Swim demonstrates sportsmanship in win vs. Waverly

Game Date
Sep 7, 2023
Score
: 119
WAVERLY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL: 24

Ionia traveled to Waverly tonight to swim against Waverly Lansing Catholic.  Ionia won 119-24.  The real story was in the sportsmanship and comradery between the two teams.  Waverly has a very small team so the swimmers from Ionia included them in the pre-meet cheers and joined in cheering for swimmers from both teams.  We had a couple of Ionia swimmers join their relay teams so that their girls could swim in relays.  It was all about supporting everyone's success.

For Ionia, the focus was on swimming new events or tackling bigger challenges, and the girls stepped up to the plate.  Many of our veteran swimmers sat out most of the races to allow our newer swimmers the opportunity to swim more events.  The biggest time drops of the night were from Katelyn Lamphere in the 100 yard butterfly, Addy Lepien in the 500 yard freestyle, and Lexi Heinlein in the 200 yard freestyle.

First place finishes included:

First place in the medley relay to Addy Lepien, Adah Drown, Mariya Berry and Makayla Lepley

First in the 200 yard freestyle by Lexi Heinlein

Amelia McGee took first in the 50 yard freestyle.

Isabelle Robinson took first in the 100 yard butterfly

Eily Martinez took first in the 100 yard freestyle

Addy Lepien took first in the 500 yard freestyle

The relay team of Lexi Heinlein, Sadie Roberts, Lena Cox and Hannah Luttman took first in the 200 yard freestyle relay.

Kaylynn Doty took first in the 100 yard backstroke

The team of Katelyn Lamphere, Lexi Heinlein, Maddie Lemke, and Amelia McGee took first in the 400 yard freestyle relay.

Ionia is now 3-0, 1-0 in the CAAC Red.  Ionia will travel to Mason this weekend for the Mason Sprint Invitational.
