WAVERLY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL: 62
Ionia traveled to Waverly to compete in the last conference dual meet of the season. Ionia won 117-62.
There were several strong races. In spite of a week of very difficult practices, the girls really swam well. Highlights of the meet included:
The Medley relay team of Maelys Bonafe, Calah Holman, Josie Phelps, and Brynn Lepien took first. Bonafe took first in the 200 and 500 yard freestyle. Madeline McGee and Lepien took first and second in the 200 yard individual medley. Holman took first in the 50 yard freestyle. Phelps and Lepien took first and second in diving. McGee took first in the 100 yard butterfly. Anouk Demel and Phelps took first and second in the 100 yard freestyle. In the 100 yard backstroke, Ionia took first, second and third with Holman, Bella Reisbig and Sage Brown all racing strong. Demel took first in the 100 yard breaststroke. To close out the meet, the relay team of Lepien, Abbye Wood, Holman and Phelps (all seniors) took first.
An unusual highlight of the meet happened in the last relay. We had our 4 exchange students, from 4 different countries swim in the 400 yard freestyle relay. They finished second with a time of 4:44.44.
We had 25 personal best times. Holman finished out the season with a personal best time in every event over the course of the season. Bella Reisbig had big drops in time for both the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 yard backstroke. Sydney Estep dropped a lot of time in both the 200 yard and 500 yard freestyle.
The Ionia girls finish the season with a 4-1 record in the CAAC Red and 7-3 overall. The team will swim again on November 5-6 for the CAAC Red Conference Championships. Go Bulldogs!
