Five of the Ionia Girls swim team qualified to swim at Calvin University at the MISCA meet which was held today.  The swimmers were strong in the water, set new school records and earned several state cuts.

Madeline McGee earned another state cut in the 200 yard freestyle.  She was seeded 53rd and finished 25th.  In the 100 yard freestyle, McGee broke her own school record from 2020, with a state cut time.  McGee was seeded 20th and finished in 12th place.  

Maelys Bonafe earned a state cut in the 200 yard freestyle and set a new school record, breaking the old record from 2012 held by Shyenne Fish.  Bonafe was seeded 34th and finished 18th.  Bonafe also earned a state cut time in the 100 yard butterfly.  She was seeded 49th and finished in 34th place.  

The relay team of McGee, Josie Phelps, Anouk Demel and Bonafe, set a new school record in the 200 yard freestyle relay.  They were seeded 37th going into the race and finished in 32nd place.  The previous record was set in 2010 by the team of Brooke Peterson, Haley Keller, Alison Bauer, and Anastasia Duell.  In this same relay, McGee broke her own school record in the 50 yard freestyle, set earlier this season.

The relay team of McGee, Brynn Lepien, Demel, and Bonafe crushed the old school record in the 400 yard freestyle relay also earning a state cut time.  The team was seeded 30th and finished in 23rd place. The previous record was set in 2010 by the team of Brooke Peterson, Anastasia Duell, Ashleigh Babcock, and Alison Bauer.

The Division 3 state meet will be held at Calvin University on November 19-20.

The Ionia Girls Swim team competes again on Thursday, October 14 in their last home meet of the season.  They will host Williamston for Senior Night.  The meet starts at 6 p.m.
