Tonight, Ionia Girls Varsity Swimming hosted the co-op team of Thornapple Kellogg/Delton Kellogg/ Hastings. Ionia lost 77-96. However, the girls swam strong! Madeline McGee broke a school record and earned a state cut time in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 25.51. McGee also earned a state cut in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.20. Maelys Bonafe broke a school record and earned a state cut time in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:29.95. Bonafe also took first place in the 100 yard breaststroke. Those were exciting races to watch!
Other highlights of the meet include first place in the 200 yard medley relay by the team of Brynn Lepien, Calah Holman, Bonafe and McGee. Anouk Demel took first place in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 1:02.33. The relay team of Josie Phelps, Sage Brown, Demel, and Lepien took first place in the 200 yard freestyle relay.
Other team members are working on improving their races and adding depth to our team. Calah Holman continues to drop time in her events at every meet. Bella Reisbig dropped almost 15 seconds in her 500 freestyle race. Josie Phelps, Riley Browne, and Sydney Estep all had personal best times in every race they swam tonight. In total, we had 25 PRs. It's rewarding to witness the swimmers improve in the short time our season has been underway.
Our record is now 2-2 in nonconference play. Ionia will travel to Eaton Rapids on Thursday, September 9 for the first conference meet of the season.
