Ionia girls varsity finished the regular season today, competing in the CAAC Red Conference Meet. Ionia finished last in a field of five teams with a score of 268. The score does not reflect the incredible swimming the Ionia Bulldogs did in the pool. Almost every girl dropped a significant amount of time and earned varsity points. Madeline McGee finished 1st in the 100 backstroke, breaking her own school record, and 2nd in the 100 yard freestyle with a 54.72, earning another state cut and shattering the school record set in 2010 by Ashleigh Babcock. Brynn Lepien took silver in both the 200 yard freestyle and the 500 yard freestyle. The team of Josie Phelps, Abbye Wood, Riley Browne and Jules Weller took bronze in the 200 yard freestyle relay. Other finishers in the top 8 included Jenna Gould (5th in 500 yard freestyle) and Josie Phelps (6th in 50 yard freestyle). We also had several swimmers finishing in the top 16 and earning points for the team: Jules Weller, Grace Brown, Calah Holman, Riley Browne, Abbye Wood, Pippa Wood, Alexis Burns, Sydney Estep, Eily Martinez and Makenna Waterman. After a crazy and unpredictable start, spending the first month of training on land, it was an exciting end to the regular season!
Madeline McGee will swim next at the Division 3 state finals on November 21 at Lake Orion High School.
