The Ionia Boys’ Cross Country team spiked up and competed in the second CAAC White division jamboree on Tuesday evening at the St. Francis Retreat Center, home course of Lansing Catholic. The host Cougars entered the meet ranked 2nd in the state in division 3 and put up a tremendous fight. At the first mile mark, LCC was ahead by 2 points. Ionia flipped it to a 2-point advantage for them at the second mile mark, setting up an exciting finish. The Bulldogs showed a lot of resolve by attacking the third mile of the course and finishing strong. In the end, Ionia earned a one-point victory, 31-32. The win gives the Bulldogs two first-place finishes and puts them in great position to earn a league title at the final league jamboree on October 21st. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was overall medalist Josiah Magley who broke the tape in a time of 16:34. Heath LaPointe crossed the line next for Ionia, finishing 5th in 17:18. Jacob Montgomery was right behind him, placing 6th in 17:31. Ellis Yokom broke into the 17’s for the first time, placing 9th with a PR of 17:58. Andrew Gerdes sealed the win, finishing 10th in 18:02 while beating two opponents right at the line. Tyson Evans secured the tiebreaker (in case it would be needed) finishing 15th in a personal-record time of 18:44. Demetri Davis also ran a season-best time of 19:22. The Bulldogs will focus on training during a break in their schedule and get geared up for the Greater Lansing Championships on October 16th.
