The Ionia 8th Grade Volleyball teams took on their rivals from Portland tonight at home in what was bound to be an exciting matchup for both the A and the B teams. The Lady Dawgs struggled to have fast feet in the first set but served tough with Elle Lepley, Brooklynn Nash, Melanie White, and Ryley Helmes all putting up some nice aces. Skye Currigan added a kill to their point total but despite their efforts, the Bulldogs fell short in the first set losing to Portland 19-25. Ready to fight for their second and third set victories, Ionia came out with more energy on the court and better communication. Skye Currigan had an impressive six aces and Brielle Nummer played aggressively at the net. Courtney Thomas was ready on defense and as a group, Ionia fought to the end but couldn't quite snag the victory. The Bulldogs lost to the Raiders 26-24. The final set was a quick one to 15 and Ionia gave it their best, but Portland was playing tough and defeated the Dawgs 15-6 in the end.
