The Ionia Varsity Volleyball team traveled to St Johns this morning to compete in their 16 team tournament. The Bulldogs got off to a great start in pool play; first beating Inland Lakes and then Potterville. After a 2 game break the team got off to a slow start but was able to rally back and split with DeWitt. The Bulldogs moved on to the Gold Bracket and faced the number one seed Petosky. Defense continued their scrappy effort keeping balls in play so offense could continue to hammer down kills. Their phenomenal teamwork led to a 3 set win that moved them onto semi-finals against Lansing Catholic. Once again the team started out tough but were unable to maintain momentum eventually falling in two sets and finishing third. It was a well balanced effort between offense and defense today. Tess Griffith led on offense with 44 kills while Rajalyaj Esquivel added 21 and Drew Wachowski had 15. Mikaiah White paced the offense with 38 assists while Grace Droste added 30. Griffith also led the effort on offense behind the service line with 5 aces on the day, while Esquivel and Droste each added 4. Londyn Brown once again had an incredible day on defense with 75 digs while Griffith and Wachowski each added 30. At the net on defense Esquivel led with 3 solo blocks. The Bulldogs are now 20-6-3 overall. Next Ionia travels to Eaton Rapids on Tuesday. Great work Bulldogs!
