The Varsity Volleyball team took to the court tonight in their home quad, opening play against Fowler. The Bulldogs jumped out to a strong start behind service runs from Paige Castillo and Londyn Brown. With a boost from aggressive play at the net, Ionia closed out the first set 25-14. Fowler came out in the second set serving strong. Ionia was able to keep things even for most of the match until Fowler went on a service run of their own. The Bulldogs worked hard, but were unable to regain momentum and dropped the second set 22-25. With a determined mindset and renewed focus, the Bulldogs got out to an early lead in the third set and finished the match with a 15-10 3rd set win.
Next the Bulldogs matched up against Central Montcalm. Ionia kept the focus and drive from their last match in a whole team effort to push through to a 25-16 first set win. In the second set, defense and offense worked in tandem to consistently put points on the board and secure the match with a 25-14 second set win.
In the final match of the night, the Bulldogs played Carson City. Ionia got out to an early lead behind a strong service run from Emma Scoby, supported by aggressive play at the net to end the set 25-9. The team stepped onto the court in the second set with the mindset to finish strong. After trading points to start, the Bulldogs found their groove and secured the match with a 25-11 second set win.
Offense had a great night tonight! Danika Fyan led the efforts with 25 kills, while Tess Griffith put down 17 and Brynn Reams added 11. Kassidy Casillas put up 51 assists to keep the offense running smoothly. Casillas also led the offensive efforts from behind the service line with 8 aces, while GraceMarie Martinez and Paige Castillo both added 6. Castillo also led the defensive efforts in the back court again tonight with 22 digs, while Casillas and Martinez both kept 6 in play. The defensive effort at the net was led by Griffith and Fyan who each had 6 blocks. Coach Wenzel was proud of the consistency and strong play overall tonight. The Bulldogs move to 19-3 overall and 4-1 in CAAC. The Varsity Volleyball team is back on their home court Tuesday, October 5th when they host Eaton Rapids.
