The Boys Track and Field Team competed at the MHSAA LP Region 15-2 Meet held at Mason High School on Friday May 19, 2023.  As a Team Ionia finished 11th out of 15 teams.  The tiered Goals set for the meet included; getting as many athletes qualified to the MHSAA State Meet, Finish in the Top 8 in individual events, which is unofficially referred to as All Region and the athletes receive MHSAA Regional Medals, and as always we celebrate PR’s (and SR’s) which is a sign of improvement.  The Bulldog Boys produced 1 State Qualifier, medaled in 4 events and had 2 PR’s and 1 SR. To qualify for the MHSAA State meet it is required to finish 1st or second in the Regional meet or meet or beat an Additional Qualifying Standard set for each event.

    Top finishers/ Medalists for Ionia included; State Qualifier Jacob Montgomery in the 800M run with a time of 1:57.4 finishing first.  This time puts Jacob approximately 1 second away from the School Record set by Nick Wharry in 2011 (1:56.3).  The 4 X 800 Relay [Jacob Montgomery, Caleb Shortz, Ellis Yokom, and Tyson Evans] finished 4th in a time of 8:24.55 which was a season record.  The 4 X 400 Relay Team [Colyn Ciganick, Brent Starks, Tyson Evans, and Jacob Montgomery finished a close 3rd in a time of 3:33.92 just 0.08 seconds behind the State Qualifying team from Mason [3:33.84].

     Ionia will compete again on Wednesday May 24th at home in the CAAC White Conference Championship meet.  The Ionia Boys are currently sitting in Second Place in the CAAC White and are seeking to improve on their current standing. The Field events begin at 3:30PM and Running Events at 4:00PM.
