Ionia traveled to Plainwell today to compete in a girls only wrestling tournament. Ionia had one wrestler compete today, Sarah Schafer. Sarah had a great day! Sarah went 2-0 with 2 pins to be today's Champion at the190 lb weight class. In the semi-finals, Sarah had a quick match taking her opponent down to her back and pinning her within 50 seconds. In the finals, Sarah had to wrestle the #1 seed who is currently ranked 5th in the state and a returning state qualifier from Paw Paw. The finals match was very exciting, first points scored were by Sarah late in the 2nd period with a takedown and ride out. To start the 3rd period we chose top and gave up a reversal, then we fought very hard to not give up a turn and eventually was able to earn a reversal and take her Paw Paw opponent to her back and with only seconds left in the 3rd period we pinned her. Our girl wrestlers will be back on the mat Friday the 3rd traveling to Dewitt for their girls only Invitational. Reminder: our boys will be wrestling this Saturday, the 28th, at Home for the annual Mike Adamson Invitational.
