WAVERLY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL: 12
Game 1: Ionia stayed in it until the end, but Waverly pulled away late in the 5th inning when McKenna Bensinger homered on a 3-2 count scoring 3 runs and leading Waverly in the 11- 5 win. Victoria Gutierrez was in the circle for the Bulldogs and she allowed 8 hits and 11 runs, striking out 6. Tori was backed up by some awesome Bulldog Defensive plays, Raj Esquivel made an amazing running/ flat out diving catch in center field and senior catcher Erin Groom threw out 2 players attempting steals. Ionia out hit Waverly 10 -8 in the loss, led by Alexia Daugherty going 2 for 2 with 2 walks and scoring one run. Melayna Braman went 2 for 4 with an RBI and scored a run, Londyn Brown went 2 for 4 with and RBI, the following players all contributed one hit: Rachel Siemen, Victoria Gutierrez, Erin Groom and Raj Esquivel smacked a solo Dinger giving her 7 on the year so far.
Game 2: The Bulldogs came up short in a game where the lead went back-and -forth. The game was tied in the 3rd inning 5 - 5 and then tied again in the 5th inning 7 - 7 and then in the 6th inning Waverly out scored Ionia 5 -1 when they hit a 3 run dinger followed by a solo dinger. Going into the 7th inning the Bulldogs were down 8 - 12 and we did score 2 more runs in the 7th but, came up short losing the battle 12 - 10.The Bulldogs once again out hit Waverly 15 - 10, the difference being they hit home runs with runners on and we did not capitalize when we had bases loaded. Londyn Brown went 3 for 4 scoring 2 runs, Erin Groom went 2 for 3 with 2 walks and one RBI and scoring one run, Victoria Gutierrez went 2 for 4 with one RBI, Kam Perry went 2 for 5 with 3 RBI's, Raj Esquivel went 2 for 4 with one walk and one RBI. The pitching duties were split between Mel Braman & Raj Esquivel each throwing 3 innings. Mel allowed 5 runs on 4 hits and Raj gave up 7 runs on 6 hits.
The Bulldogs are now 11 & 11 and we host our invitational tourney this Saturday, we play at 10a.m., noon, and 2:00ish.
Reflecting on tonights games just makes me shake my head when I think about all the crazy situations we have been through and with only 4 returning players I truly Believe that we are playing some pretty good softball. We show improvements every time we play but, we need to put some lessons behind us and move forward. #goblue
