4/17 Game #1 Early Lead For Pewamo-Westphalia Seals Fate For Ionia Bulldogs Varsity

Ionia Bulldogs Varsity fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 5-2 loss to Pewamo-Westphalia on Saturday. Pewamo-Westphalia took the lead on a single in the first inning. Ionia Bulldogs Varsity lost despite out-hitting Pewamo-Westphalia eight to six.

Sophomore Danny McCoy pitched for Ionia going 4 innings, giving up 1 run, 2 hits and 8 strikeouts.  Owen Delvin came in relief and gave up 4 runs on a third of an inning.  Aj Castillo pitched 2 and 1/3 innings giving up 0 runs on 1 hit.  

Ionia was led by Collin Palmer on offense, going 2-3 with an Rbi, Ethan Bowen was 1-3 with an Rbi as well.  Owen Delvin, Cal Yalacki, Kane Lundstrom, Trevor Arens and Tanner Gregory all added hits for the bulldogs.

4/17 Game #2 Ionia Bulldogs Varsity Can't Catch Up To Pewamo-Westphalia

Ionia Bulldogs Varsity watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 9-5 loss to Pewamo-Westphalia on Saturday. Pewamo-Westphalia scored on a single by Nurenbeal, a sacrifice fly by Wirth, a walk by Thelen, a single by Stopczynski, and a walk by Wirth in the second inning.

Pewamo-Westphalia got things moving in the second inning, when Nurenbeal singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run.

Ionia Bulldogs Varsity put up three runs in the sixth inning. Ionia Bulldogs Varsity scored its runs on a single by Ethan Bowen.

Schafer was the winning pitcher for Pewamo-Westphalia. The fireballer lasted four and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out four. Thelen threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Trevor Arens took the loss for Ionia Bulldogs Varsity. The righty went two innings, allowing six runs on five hits and striking out two.

Ionia Bulldogs Varsity totaled nine hits in the game. Bowen and Owen Delvin all had multiple hits for Ionia Bulldogs Varsity. Delvin and Bowen each managed two hits to lead Ionia Bulldogs Varsity.

Pewamo-Westphalia scattered nine hits in the game. Simon and Thelen all managed multiple hits for Pewamo-Westphalia. Simon led Pewamo-Westphalia with three hits in four at bats. 

Pewamo-Westphalia tore up the base paths, as two players stole at least two bases. Thelen led the way with two.

Ionia is now 6-3 overall and picks up league play on Tuesday at Portland.
