The Ionia boys varsity tennis team had a great day at the league meet on Thursday finishing third overall. Every team and/or player for the bulldogs won their first match and ended up either playing for the championship or at least third or fourth place.
First singles Christian Miller finished third for the Bulldogs beating Eaton Rapids 6-4,6-3. Losing to Lansing Catholic 6-0,6-0, before beating Lakewood in the 3rd/4th place match 6-3,6-3. Second singles Cole Petersen finished fourth beating Lakewood 7-5,6-1, losing to Portland 6-1,6-3 and losing the 3rd/4th place match to Eaton Rapids 6-3, 4-6,2-6. Third singles Harper Duell finished third by beating Charlotte 6-1,6-0, losing to Portland 6-1,6-1, then beating Lakewood in the 3rd/4th place match 5-7,7-5,7-6. Fourth singles Jake Whitney had a bye the first round, beat Eaton Rapids 6-1,6-1, before falling to Lansing Catholic 6-2,6-4 in the championship and finishing second.
First doubles Ryan Lee and Jaxon Palmer took fourth, beating Charlotte 6-1,6-2, losing to Lansing Catholic 6-1,6-0, then losing to Eaton Rapids 7-6,7-6. Second doubles Jude Gregory and Riley Yokom took third, beating Lakewood 6-3,6-0, losing to Portland 6-1,6-4, before beating Lansing Catholic in the 3rd/4th match 6-4,6-0. Third doubles Myles Perrien and Mason Clark took home the championship for the Bulldogs, getting a bye in the first round, then beating Portland 6-1,3-6,6-2, and beating Lansing Catholic in the championship 6-3,0-6, 7-6. Fourth doubles Nolan Lundstrom and Steven Flohr took second, getting a bye in the first round, beating Eaton Rapids 7-6,1-6,6-1 before falling to Lansing Catholic in the championship 6-0,6-2.
The Bulldogs just missed out on second place by three points in what was a very good day for this tennis team. Monday the Bulldogs play at home, which is senior night, before traveling to Mason next Wednesday for the Regional meet.
