Ionia boys tennis takes second at league meet

The Ionia boys varsity tennis team took second in the league meet on Wednesday.  Because Ionia lost to both Lansing Catholic and Portland during the regular season, it means that Ionia and Portland finish the season tied for second in the league overall.  Cole Petersen was a league champion for Ionia winning his flight at third singles.  Cole was the two seed and defeated Portland in the semis 6-0,6-1 and then defeated Lansing Catholic in the championship, who he had lost to on Monday, 6-2,6-0.  The fourth doubles team of Nolan Lundstrom and Jake Whitney lost an incredibly close match in the championship.  The bulldogs defeated Eaton Rapids in the semis 6-4,6-1 before losing the championship to Lansing Catholic 6-3,4-6, 10-8.  Christian Miller took second for the bulldogs at second singles defeating Lansing Catholic in the semis 6-3, 3-6,10-7 then losing 6-4,6-0 to Portland in the championship.  Fourth singles Harper Duell also took second defeating Lakewood in the semis 6-1,6-1 then falling in a tough championship match to Lansing Catholic 6-4,6-4.  Second doubles Riley Yokom and Jaxon Palmer also finished second beating Lansing Catholic 6-4,6-7, 10-8 in the semis before losing to Portland 6-2,6-1 in the championship.

Owen Shippey took third at first singles beating Eaton Rapids in the first round 6-4,6-2, losing to Lansing Catholic in the semis 6-1,6-0 and winning third place by beating Lakewood 2-6,6-4,10-8.  First doubles Jude Gregory and Ryan Lee also took third, beating Lakewood 6-2,6-2 in the first round, losing to Portland 6-2,6-2 and then beating Eaton Rapids 5-7,6-4,11-9.  Third doubles Mason Clark and Riley McClintock took fourth beating Lakewood 6-1,6-0 in the first round, losing 6-1,6-0 to Lansing Catholic in the semis and then losing 6-2,6-0 to Portland.  

The bulldogs have a last home match on Monday against St. Johns which will also be senior night before they head to Mason next Wednesday for the Regional tournament.
