Monday night, with temps in the low 30's, the Ionia girls varsity soccer dug deep to win 2-1i n thrilling fashion. Ionia played a home matchup vs Wyoming Potters House, with the game at a 0-0 tie at halftime, things were moving slow.
Isabelle Vasquez played a nice ball through the middle, and on an error from Wyoming, Natalia Magallon stole the ball and scored early in the first half to put Ionia up 1-0. Potters House would level the playing field just a few minutes later, and the game would go back stalemate. Both teams had lots of chances to take the game, until Magallon drew a corner kick for Ionia with just 1 minute left in the game. The ball was played into the middle and bounced around until a handball was called inside the box.
With 40 seconds left in the game Tessa Masengale stepped up to take the penalty kick and buried it in the back of the net. Tessa continues to be a force for the team and made a big play when it mattered most tonight.
Ionia improves to 2-1 on the season and will take on Hastings in an away matchup with a 5pm varsity kickoff.
