Ionia’s Kaye Breining (KB) passed away earlier this week and left a legacy as a coach, teacher, official, mentor, and friend. KB was the pioneer of the girls athletic program at Ionia High School as she started and coached girls basketball, volleyball, softball, and track. She coached for more than 15 years and impacted not only those young women she coach but all of the young ladies playing sports in Ionia today. I was able to find an old article “Pioneering Girls Sports at Ionia High School” that I used to share with my players as a bit of a history lesson and thought many of you would like to read as well as we celebrate her life. I have also attached her bio from the Class of 2015 Ionia High School Athletic Hall of Fame induction. KB loved sports and helping to create opportunities for others to share that passion as is evident in the impact she had on our school and community. Rest in Peace KB!
